Massachusetts - From 1845 to 1847, author and naturalist Henry David Thoreau built a cabin and farmed a plot of land on Walden Pond in eastern Massachusetts . The wooded land on Walden Pond was owned by Thoreau’s mentor and friend Ralph Waldo Emerson. Seven years after Thoreau moved away from the humble cabin, his book “Walden” was published in 1854. The book was not popular during his lifetime, but it eventually inspired naturalists and conservationists for generations to come. In 1922, the family of Ralph Waldo Emerson granted this land to the state of Massachusetts, and today the Walden Pond State Reservation encompasses 250 acres surrounding the lake.:
