Step 1 : Introduction to the question "What type of stone was used to build the White House?"
...The exterior of the White House was built using sandstone, most of which came from the Aquia Creek quarry, located on Government Island in the Potomac River in Virginia. Pierre Charles L’Enfant purchased the quarry in 1791, and sandstone was harvested until 1799. The same Aquia Creek sandstone was also used to build parts of the U.S. Capitol building, as well as George Washington’s Mount Vernon home. The quarry on Government Island is now a park, and visitors can still see chisel marks on the remaining stone.
