Later, the term would be used for any electrochemical cells linked together for the purpose of providing electric power. Franklin’s “electrical battery” was a wooden box, somewhat bigger than today’s plastic milk crates. Inside the box contained a collection of Leyden jars to hold and discharge electricity. Wiring the charged jars together, he created and named the first electrical battery.
