Stratford-upon-Avon - England’s most famous playwright hails from the medieval town of Stratford-upon-Avon, located along the Avon River in the West Midlands. Shakespeare’s family home is formally known as “Shakespeare’s Birthplace” and welcomes visitors from all over the world hoping to walk in the wordsmith’s footsteps. His parents, John Shakespeare and Mary Arden, wed in 1557, and William was born in 1564, the third of eight children. His father became the Mayor of Stratford in 1568, and at the age of 18, William married Anne Hathaway in 1582. The newlyweds resided at the family home, where their three children were born. When his father died in 1601, William inherited the house as the eldest surviving son. Passed through descendants over the years, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust purchased the residence at auction in 1847 and have been its preservationists ever since.:
