Angkor Wat was the capital of the Khmer Empire, which was founded in the ninth century. The main temple was built at the beginning of the 12th century and began as a Hindu temple, stretching across 400 acres. Commissioned by King Suryavarman II, the temple was dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. By the end of that same century, however, Angkor Wat was converted into a Buddhist temple. It still serves today as a Buddhist pilgrimage destination and one of Cambodia’s most popular tourist attractions.:
