The state border runs between the yellow marker lines in the center of the road. The history of the two Bristols dates to 1852, when a landowner named Joseph Anderson bought acreage on either side of the state borders. He started the town of Bristol on the Tennessee side, and another settlement called Goodsonville cropped up on the Virginia side. As the two cities’ downtown areas grew close together along State Street, Goodsonville eventually renamed itself Bristol, though the state border between the two cities remained.:
