San Francisco - San Francisco’s Telegraph Hill has been home to Coit Tower since 1933. The fluted white concrete tower, which offers 360-degree views of the city and surrounding Bay Area, was built after a wealthy woman named Lillie Hitchcock Coit died in 1929 and left a bequest for the purpose of beautifying the city. Coit was also patron of the city’s firefighters, and funds from her bequest were also used to build a monument to these heroic individuals in nearby Washington Square.
