While the castle might appear perfectly fairytale-esque on a cliff overlooking the village of Honau below, the privately-owned Gothic-revival “castle” was, however, never a working castle at all. It was actually a hunting lodge that was built to resemble a castle and was inspired by author Wilhelm Hauff’s novel, “Lichtenstein.” Local leader, Wilhelm Graf von Württemberg, wanted to see the fictional castle made a reality, and so its construction as a hunting lodge was completed in 1842.:
