When the Washington Iowa State Theatre showed its first films, tickets cost just 15 to 35 cents — a far cry from today’s average ticket price of over $9. The Washington Iowa State Theatre has been in operation for 123 years, making it the oldest cinema in the world. A local husband-and-wife team originally opened the theater as the Graham Opera House but later converted it to a cinema. The first screenings were imported French films shown in an auditorium that held 783 people. After a 2011 renovation that kept much of the original architectural features intact, the theatre continues to serve the town’s 7,000 residents today.:
