Arizona - The Desert View Watchtower was built to complement the stunning landscape of the Grand Canyon — not compete with it. Although the tower may look like an ancient ruin, it was designed in the early 1930s by architect Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter for the Fred Harvey Company. The sandstone structure was inspired by stone towers built by the ancestral Puebloan people in the Southwest about 800 years ago. Colter was exacting about her work, modeling a design of white decorative stones on a pattern at Chaco Canyon and even adding built-in cracks that resembled other ancient towers. When the watchtower is open, visitors can climb 85 steps inside for a panoramic view of the canyon and admire the intricate wall murals by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie.:
