Tallahassee, Florida - The name Tallahassee has been in use since at least the 16th century. It comes from the Apalachee Native American tribe, and is usually translated as “old fields” or “old town,” although some translate it as “sun town.” Its first use among Europeans was on a British map from 1767, which referred to a village on the west side of Lake Jackson as “Tallahassa” or “Tonaby’s Town.” (Tonaby was a Seminole chief.) When the territorial capital was founded in the 19th century, the name Tallahassee was chosen by Octavia Walton, the 14-year-old daughter of Florida’s territorial secretary George Walton, because of its association with the Native Americans of the area. Walton, meanwhile, grew up to be a prominent socialite and writer known as Madame Le Vert. :
