Step 1 : Introduction to the question "What caused Paul's boat to shipwreck at Malta?"
...Paul, a prisoner under the charge of the centurion, Julius, was on board a ship with 276 total passengers, at the mercy of the wind. The weather had driven them past their intended harbor and they were violently storm-tossed. They had to jettison cargo, and when they were still in the midst of the tempest days later, with no sight of either the sun or the stars, they threw the ship’s ropes and rigging overboard with their own hands. The sailors had lost all hope. Paul stood up among them and said, “I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of this ship. I had a vision, and the angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I worship, told me that I would stand before Caesar. And God has granted me all who sail with me. I have faith in God that it will be exactly as I have been told. But we must run aground on some island.” They’d been in the storm for 14 days and had even thrown their food overboard. The sailors suspected they were nearing land. They cast anchor, hoping to run the ship ashore onto the unknown beach. But they struck a reef instead and ran aground. The bow stuck and remained immoveable; the stern was being broken up by the surf. Julius the centurion ordered those who could swim to jump overboard and make for the land, and the rest were to go on planks or pieces of the ship. And so it was that all were brought safely to land.
