Turkey - The oldest place of worship ever discovered, Göbekli Tepe in Turkey was built well before the Great Wall of China (221 B.C.), the Parthenon (447 B.C.), and even the Egyptian pyramids (2500 B.C.). Its date of construction is estimated to be sometime during the 10th century B.C., which makes it 11,500 years old and likely one of the first permanent structures built by humans. According to anthropologists, evidence indicates that Göbekli Tepe was a place of communal worship and a site of sacred rites. The ceremonial site consists of some 50 T-shaped pillars as high as 17 feet tall and decorated with animals such as wild boars, jaguars, and carrion birds. Spread across a hillside near the Syrian border, the Neolithic monoliths can be seen for miles in any direction.:
