Singapore - The mythical “merlion” is half-lion, half-fish. The creature isn’t real, but it is a national icon of Singapore, where it’s said to represent the city’s beginnings as a fishing village, as well as its original name of Singapura (“Lion City” in Malay). This merlion statue is actually one of seven approved merlion statues around the country. It was constructed by local craftsman Lim Nang Seng and unveiled in 1972 at the mouth of the Singapore River. A bridge built in 1997 obscured the view of the statue, so it was later moved to its current location in Merlion Park overlooking Marina Bay. There’s another smaller merlion statue in the park too known as the “Merlion Cub.”:
