One day in 1873, a teenager named Chester Greenwood got cold ears while ice skating but didn’t want to stop and go indoors. Instead, he bent some wire into loops, asked his grandmother to cover the loops with beaver fur, and continued on skating with protected ears. Four years later, he patented “Greenwood's Champion Ear Protectors” — the first of more than 100 patents Greenwood would file over his life. He went on to make a fortune selling his “ear protectors” to U.S. soldiers during World War I. Greenwood was so successful that Maine’s legislature officially declared the first day of winter “Chester Greenwood Day.” Farmington also dedicates the first December Saturday to Greenwood, celebrating his life and legacy with charity runs, chili cook-offs, and — of course — a parade of people in earmuffs.:
