A wall was built to keep the British out - Although everyone knows Wall Street as the home of the New York Stock Exchange, its name has nothing to do with the stock market. In the 17th century, Dutch settlers on the island of Manhattan built a defensive wall on the southernmost tip to combat pirates and British invaders. Although the Dutch defensive wall was never used for its intended purpose and was later removed, its legend influenced the naming of the street. (While this is the most widely accepted theory, some historians attribute the name to the Walloons, the French-speaking Dutch who were early settlers of Manhattan.) Wall Street has become synonymous with America’s stock exchange and financial sector, which has been located there since the Buttonwood Agreement was signed in 1792. The agreement defined trading securities and, in 1817, the broker organization was renamed the New York Stock Exchange.:
