He chose Beaver Island to fulfill this vision and led his disciples there from Voree, Wisconsin. The group transformed the island into a thriving community, which even had its own daily newspaper. A coronation ceremony was held in 1850 to crown Strang king of the island. However, the non-Mormons on the island grew suspicious of Strang — and so did the U.S. government. He was arrested for treason just six years later. Many of his disciples left the island, and not much of the former Mormon community remains there. :
