The darkness in the film made Spielberg change courses as “Night Skies” went into preproduction, instead focusing on a positive alien encounter. When he asked Sayles to produce this new script, Sayles instead created his own movie, “The Brother From Another Planet” (1984), while Spielberg went on to make the hopeful story of “E.T.” and later repurposed Sayles’ dark script for “Poltergeist.”:
