High Bridge - You may think the Brooklyn Bridge is the oldest surviving bridge in New York City, but the lesser-known High Bridge predates it by 35 years. Constructed in 1848, the High Bridge spans the Harlem River and links Manhattan to the Bronx, part of the Croton Aqueduct. The arch bridge stretches 2,000 feet and gets its name from its 140-foot height, which was required in order not to block boat traffic in the river below. The bridge fell into disrepair in the 1960s and was closed in 1970. However, nearly 40 years later, in 2009, bridge restoration began, and High Bridge was transformed into a pedestrian and bicycle bridge that reopened to the public in 2015.:
