Situated amongst some of New York City’s most famous roads — including Madison, Park, and 5th Avenues — the “half” avenue between 6th Avenue and 7th Avenue is the only one in the Big Apple with a fractional number. The street was made official with signposts from the Department of Transportation in 2012, though it had long been used by workers in Midtown and is considered a Privately Owned Public Space. Known as POPs, these spaces began to pop up in the 1960s as property developers were provided incentives to build public areas around their buildings like arcades, plazas, and atriums. There are about 500 POPs in New York City today, and 6 1/2 Avenue is a prime example.:
