Oman - The sprawling, mud-brick Bahla Fort was once the highlight of Bahla, a town in the middle of the desert. It was built in the 13th century by the Banu Nebhan family (the Nabhani dynasty), who dominated the area and made Bahla their capital until the 15th century. As one of the oldest forts in Oman, Bahla Fort is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and open to the public. The fort features a labyrinth surrounded by an extensive stone-and-mud-brick wall (called a “sur”) with rounded watchtowers and crenellated parapets. Though much of the fort is in ruins, its impressive irrigation system featuring wells and underground channels has remained surprisingly intact.:
