But in 1677, Maine and Massachusetts were one and the same. Maine existed as a province of Massachusetts for 143 years. As early as 1785, though, the undercurrents of independence in Maine were brewing — and residents of the province continually brought the idea of statehood to a vote between 1792 and 1819, mostly due to frustrations with the way the Massachusetts government treated their province. Finally, in 1819, the push for statehood gained enough support, and Maine became the nation's 23rd state on March 15, 1820.:
