The Persian Gulf surrounding the Middle Eastern nation features brackish water, which provides the right conditions for the formation of shiny pearls. The risky task of diving for pearls (without oxygen!) was a profitable venture, and divers risked shark encounters and heavy water pressure to find the tiny treasures. But in the mid-1920s, oyster farms built in Japan grew cultured pearls that were safer to harvest and cheap to produce. In the 1930s, the Great Depression dried up the pearl market, but fortunately oil was discovered in Qatar in 1939.:
