Syria and Egypt - The United Arab Republic was a 20th-century sovereign state that lasted less than four years. In 1958, after years of conflict and a looming threat of a Communist takeover left Syria embroiled in political turmoil, the country sought a union with Egypt in hopes of establishing greater stability in the Arab region. Though reluctant at first, Egypt eventually agreed, and in February of that year, the two countries united to establish the United Arab Republic. The union was unpopular in Syria, and only a few short years later in 1961, the country experienced a military coup. The new ruling party immediately decided to secede from the union with Egypt. The secession went largely uncontested, ending the short reign of the United Arab Republic.:
