Sri Lanka - In 1960, Sri Lanka’s Sirimavo Bandaranaike became the first woman to be elected head of a government in the modern world. Bandaranaike was the husband of the previous prime minister of Sri Lanka, which was then known as Ceylon. When he was assassinated in 1959, she took over the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, leading them to victory in the country’s 1960 elections. Bandaranaike promised to continue her late husband’s nationalization policies, but her emotional and captivating speeches also won the hearts of the Sri Lankan public. She served two terms as head of state, from 1960 to 1965 and again from 1970 to 1977. Bandaranaike also left her mark on the country by establishing a political dynasty — her daughter Chandrika Kumaratunga also served as the country’s first and only female president from 1994 to 2005.:
