Norway - Stave churches are a medieval Scandinavian style of architecture characterized by an ornate wooden construction featuring corner-posts (“staves”), and usually enriched with elaborate carvings. They reflect centuries of Viking craftsmanship, and are built to withstand the region’s harsh weather. While thousands of stave churches once existed, only 28 remain standing today, and almost all of them are in Norway. This church, the Stave Church from Gol, dates to around 1200, but was restored and moved to Oslo in the 19th century. Full of carvings depicting animal and plant motifs, it’s now one of the top attractions at the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History (Norsk Folkemuseum) in Oslo.:
