Vermont - A visit to the Haskell Free Library and Opera House might be one of the most memorable ways to cross the border between the U.S. and Canada. A thick black line runs right through the library’s reading room to mark the border, allowing visitors to read in two different countries at the same time. The Victorian building was constructed in 1904 by a local patron of the arts, Martha Stewart Haskell, who was Canadian. Her husband was American, and she wanted everybody to enjoy the library, so Haskell decided to place it right on the border. Half of the building lies in Derby Line, Vermont, while the other half is in Stanstead, Quebec. If you happen to catch an opera in the accompanying 400-seat theater, you’ll be seated in the U.S., while the stage is in Canada. The entertainment is international, too — both the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and I Musici de Montreal both have played here.:
