Faced with mounting opposition from protesters, Peru’s interim president resigned after less than six full days on the job. Mr. Merino, the head of Congress, had taken power after legislators shocked the nation by voting to remove the popular incumbent, Martín Vizcarra. \\Following Mr. Merino’s resignation, Peru’s legislature on Monday selected the country’s third president in a week. Its newest leader, Francisco Sagasti, is an engineer, academic and first-time legislator. The naming of Mr. Sagasti as president, however, was not expected to immediately quell popular anger at the country’s lawmakers, whom many Peruvians see as corrupt — and responsible for the turmoil.
