The natural tunnel eroded out of a 150-foot cliff of Blackhand sandstone. Hocking Hills State Park in southeastern Ohio has a number of unique rock features, including cliffs and waterfalls. The Rock House has been used for centuries, with evidence it was once a shelter for Native Americans and more recently used as a hideout for robbers and bootleggers.:
