Vienna - You might be surprised to find that there is a micronation within Vienna, Austria — and its history is even quirkier than you’d think. In 1971, artist Edwin Lipburger and his son Nikolaus constructed a large spherical building named Kugelmugel to serve as their art workshop in the small town of Katzeldorf. However, local authorities told them the unusual building was against code. To protect their creation from demolition, the Lipburgers came up with a unique solution: to simply a new township surrounding it. Legal tensions with the town soon escalated, so the Lipburgers then attempted to make it a federal state, going so far as to produce their own stamps and currency. It wasn’t successful, but the bold act of resistance quickly attracted attention. In the 1980s, Austria’s culture minister suggested Kugelmugel be moved to Vienna’s Prater amusement park, where it remains today. The micronation still has about 600 citizens (in spirit, of course).:
