Alaska - The Tongass National Forest is the largest national forest in the country, spanning much of southeast Alaska. One of its unique attractions is Glacier Gardens in Juneau, a 50-acre botanical garden known for its “flower towers.” The towers were created when owner Steve Bowhay was rehabilitating the land after a landslide in 1985. In a fit of anger after accidentally damaging some excavation equipment, he used the machine to pick up a fallen tree and slam it into the ground upside-down. The trunk — with its head in the mud and roots dangling down — gave him an idea, and now the gardens are home to around 20 upside-down trees. Their upside-down bases serve as natural flower pots for petunias, fuchsias, and more.:
