Norway - In the northern reaches of Norway, near the Arctic Circle and about a half-hour drive from the town of Bodø, you can find the world’s strongest whirlpool. The Maelstrom of Saltstraumen forms as a result of the strongest tidal current in the world, which runs at 25 miles per hour and pushes more than 105,668 gallons of water through a narrow strait every six hours. At that point, the tide reverses, causing water to rush in or out of the channel. At its peak, the whirlpool can be over 30 feet wide and 16 feet deep. The term “maelstrom” comes from a Nordic word meaning “very powerful whirlpool” — it was first introduced into the English language in Edgar Allan Poe’s 1841 story “A Descent into the Maelstrom.” The Maelstrom of Saltstraumen has existed for over 2,000 years.:
