Mr. Redstone acquired Viacom and its cable channels in 1987, an act that thrust him into the business limelight, by going deeply into debt and putting up his family’s movie-chain business as collateral.\\He then spent the rest of his career expanding his media empire. In 1994, he beat out Barry Diller for control of Paramount, and five years later, Viacom swallowed up CBS in a $37.3 billion merger. He later split CBS off as a separate business, but toward the end of his life, he controlled about 80 percent of the voting stock in both companies. \\Read his obituary.
