Kyiv, Ukraine - The towering Independence Monument overlooks Kyiv’s Maidan Nezalezhnosti, the city’s central square. Constructed in 2001, the cast bronze statue commemorates the 10th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence from the Soviet Union. The monument itself is composed of a 170-foot tower that is topped by a 29-foot figure of Berehynia — a figure in Slavic mythology — holding the Guelder Rose, which is a symbol of Ukraine. In designing the look of Berehynia, the author of the project, Anton Kushch, chose his daughter, American artist Christina Katrakis, to serve as his model. In addition to its official name, Independence Monument has acquired the nickname “The Drowned Maiden” to honor Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko and his famous poem bearing the same name as well as in recognition that, over time, the monument has acquired a greenish tint.:
