Brunelleschi's Dome is so iconic that it is known in Florence and beyond simply as \"Il Duomo\" — Italian for \"the dome.\" The dome is a part of the Cathedral of Santa Maria, a spectacular structure that took more than 140 years to complete. Incredibly, work began on the cathedral before anyone knew if it could truly be finished. Though the massive dome was in the blueprints from the start (the year 1293), there was no technological or engineering solution known at the time that would have allowed it to actually be built. Only generations later, during the Renaissance, did a design from Filippo Brunelleschi finally allow builders to wrap up construction.:
