Turkey - You’d be forgiven for assuming that Swedish meatballs originated in Sweden, but the Swedes themselves admit that Swedish meatballs are Turkish in heritage. In fact, the country’s official Twitter account posted in 2018 that “Swedish meatballs are actually based on a recipe King Charles XII brought home from Turkey in the early 18th century.” They credit Turkish “kofte,” which combines minced or ground beef, lamb, chicken, or pork with onions and a blend of spices. Meatballs weren’t the only item that King Charles XII brought back with him from Turkey; he also introduced Sweden to stuffed cabbages and coffee, and Sweden is now one of the world’s biggest coffee consumers per capita. The country did, however, add their own special twist to the self-named dish: They topped the meatballs with gravy.:
