Dunnottar Castle sits on the rocky cliffs near Stonehaven, Scotland, perched above the North Sea, which crashes against the shores some 160 feet below. Although structures existed on the land prior to the 15th century, the ruins you see today date back mostly to around 1400–1600. Quite a few events took place on the headland — Vikings destroyed what stood there in the 9th century, for instance — but most memorably the Scottish crown jewels were stashed there to prevent losing them to Oliver Cromwell in the 17th century.\n:
