"Swiss" - The popular font Helvetica is everywhere, online and in real life. You've probably seen it on countless signs, or in logos for your favorite brands. (It's also all over the New York City subway.) In typeface terms, it's a simple sans-serif — meaning there aren't any of those little fancy tails on the letters — that was invented by Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffmann in 1957. Miedinger worked for Hoffmann at the Haas Type Foundry in Münchenstein, Switzerland. According to Tuts+, the font they created was originally known as Neue Haas Grotesk, after the type foundry and the "grotesque" design movement. But in 1960, in an effort to make it more appealing overseas, it was renamed "Helvetica" — the Latin word for "Swiss" chosen in honor of the font's country of origin.:
