Grand Central - When Grand Central Terminal opened on February 2, 1913, it featured a beautiful aqua-and-gold mural meant to depict a slice of the heavens. Many of the images were drawn from Johann Bayer’s 1603 star atlas, “Uranometria,” and the design was painted right onto the plaster ceiling. Not long after the terminal opened, however, one eagle-eyed commuter noticed that the zodiac figures in the mural were reversed — east was west and west was east. Railroad officials dismissed the criticism, arguing the mural was painted “from God’s perspective.” After several restorations and renovations, the mural is now painted on boards affixed to the ceiling. There’s a rectangle in the northwest corner where you can see what the mural looked like before a clean-up scrubbed off years of accumulated cigarette tar and other grime.:
