Step 2 : Answer to the question "What is the only U.S. city built within a meteor crater?"
Middlesboro, Kentucky - In the center of Appalachia, an unusually round valley surrounds the city of Middlesboro, Kentucky. And its unique shape is no accident: It’s the site where a meteor was thought to hit Earth some 300 million years ago. Kentucky geologist William M. Andrews Jr. explains the strong evidence for this theory: “You have the round shape, shattered rock in the middle and deformed rocks around the sides that have been bent, folded or shoved.” Founded in 1886, the city of Middlesboro formed between the Pine Mountain and the Cumberland Mountains to exploit the area’s coal and iron deposits. But according to scientific theory, a 1,500-foot meteor struck millions of years before that, puncturing the earth and creating a 3-mile hole and slopes that climbed 1,900 feet. The meteor itself mostly disintegrated on impact or was blasted back into the atmosphere. :
