Nebraska - Nebraska (NE) is the only state abbreviation that has changed from the original postal code applied in 1963. Originally coded NB, this change was made for a few reasons. Firstly, the Canadian Postal Administration requested the alteration, as the Canadian province of New Brunswick was often abbreviated “NB.” Secondly, the post office wanted to be consistent, as most states were abbreviated with the first two letters in the state’s name unless other states conflicted with that (Arkansas (AR) and Arizona (AZ), for instance). The change from NB to NE was made in 1969, after which postal codes were officially introduced in Canada in 1971.:
