At the time of its construction, however, the Home Insurance Building was considered monumental in scale. It was so large, in fact, that according to History.com, city authorities paused work on the structure because they worried it would topple over. Thanks to its steel frame, it didn't — and other so-called skyscrapers soon followed. The building was eventually demolished to make room for a different skyscraper, the 45-story Field Building, but its influence on modern architecture is still evident in today's city skylines. :
