Step 2 : Answer to the question "How much of the United States is underwater?"

50% - International law allows nations to claim up to 12 nautical miles from their coastal baseline as their sovereign territory. This area is known as a country’s territorial sea and all of it, including the ocean floor below and the air above, falls under the control of the nation it belongs to. Extending 24 nautical miles from that same mark is an area known as the contiguous zone where a country’s control is more limited. However, a country is also able to claim up to 200 nautical miles, or 230.2 miles, from its baseline. This area is known as the exclusive economic zone and although rights continue to diminish after 24 nautical miles out, a country has total sovereignty over all natural resources in the EEZ and the sole right to conduct exploration there. The United States exerts its rights to the maximum allowed territorial waters in most cases, giving it control over more of the ocean than any other country on the planet. Much of it, though, remains unexplored, making the vast United States seabed the last great American frontier.:
