Step 2 : Answer to the question "How did jaywalking get its name?"

\"Jay\" was a term for a naive or inexperienced person - The term \"jaywalking\" — which today refers to crossing a street illegally without regard to traffic rules — dates back to the early 20th century. It was predated by \"jay-driving\" and \"jay-driver,\" but an early reference to jaywalkers can be found in a 1905 edition of the Kansas City Star. The phrase also popped up in an article in the Chicago Tribune in 1909. So, why \"jay\"? At the time, the word \"jay\" was used derogatorily to refer to someone who had not been conditioned to the etiquette of urban life — someone who did not quite \"fit\" the so-called requirements of belonging in the city. Initially, according to Merriam-Webster, it had little to do with crossing the street and more to do with just general \"sidewalk etiquette.\" In the 1920s, however, it became more widespread as local politicians and people in the auto industry began to warn against the dangers of crossing the street in unmarked zones. By the 1930s, jaywalking was illegal in many cities around the United States. :
