Darwin’s bark spider - The Darwin's bark spider is tiny — the bodies of females are only about half an inch big, and the males are 10 times smaller. But they build the biggest (and some of the toughest) spiderwebs known to exist. The webs are often positioned over rivers in their native habitat of Madagascar, and a single construction can span more than 80 feet. Positioning the webs over rivers helps the spiders capture mayflies, dragonflies, and other meaty insects who live near the water. The Darwin’s bark spider was only discovered in 2009. It was officially described on the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin's “On the Origin of Species” — hence the name.:
