Pharos, Egypt - The Lighthouse of Alexandria on Pharos Island was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Believed to be more than 330 feet tall — and possibly upwards of 450 feet, by some estimates — it was easily one of the tallest structures of its time, second only to the pyramids of Giza. According to Ancient History Encyclopedia, Ptolemy I Soter had the lighthouse built as both a symbol of his power and a way to guide ships into Alexandria. It stood tall as a triumph of art and architecture for many years but ultimately succumbed to natural disaster sometime in the 14th century, having been weakened by multiple earthquakes between 796 CE and 1330 CE. All that remains of it today are records and pieces of its remains, which were found around the ancient monument in the 1990s and have been traced back to the Ptolemaic Kingdom. :
