One of those, according to the Irish Times, was Shannon Airport in County Clare. In the event of multiple engine failure late into a shuttle's ascent, the crew could use Shannon's two-mile runway for an emergency landing. Marty Lindy, a landing support officer for NASA, told the Irish Times that the space agency would check in with the airport before launch, to clear area weather forecasts and ensure that nothing was obstructing the Shannon runway. Fortunately, the airport was never needed for an emergency landing — only one shuttle experienced engine failure, and it was still able to ascend. Additionally, NASA had several other emergency landing sites and contingency plans that likely would have preceded Shannon. :
