Constructed between 756 and 773 AD by order of Rashtrakuta King Krishna I, the temple was built for Lord Shiva, one of the most important Hindu gods. Around 200,000 tons of rock were removed over 18 years in order to complete it – a feat even today’s engineers find daunting using modern-day technology.:
