Wierschem, Germany - Burg Eltz in Wierschem, Germany, is one of the few ancient castles that has stayed in tact over time and still belongs to the same family. According to Atlas Obscura, the Eltz family has owned the property for more than 850 years, ever since they first moved in during the 12th century. Due to renovations, however, construction on the castle wasn't completed until sometime between the late 1400s and early 1500s. It has since survived multiple wars, including the Thirty Years War, which is thought to have destroyed thousands of other castles throughout Europe. And although it has undergone various repairs and updates, much of the original architecture and decor remains. Today it has 80 rooms — some of which are rumored to be haunted by medieval ghosts. :
