Today, scientists know that the natural fires — once mysterious and frightening — are caused by gas reserves propelled to the surface by underground pressure. While most of the fires have burned out over time, Yanar Dağ, aka Fire Mountain, remains, with a 30-foot wall of fire that still burns on its hillside.:
